In his formative years as an artist in Bloomington, Indiana’s DIY scene, Chicago's Brian Berger experienced a prolific streak, releasing two EPs and two full-lengths, plus a collection of singles and covers, in the span of two years. Following the release of his debut solo EP Personal Songs for the Impersonal Internet, Berger began playing shows among the college town’s house show scene, and followed up in January 2016 with his first full-length Still Life With Prudence. With nods to his original influences, including late Bright Eyes and emo artists such as Kevin Devine, Still Life With Prudence helped Berger find his voice and gain footing as a solo artist. A few short months later, his second EP, Weekend Astronauts, was added to his rapidly growing discography.
Berger’s second full-length, Temporary Towns, is not necessarily a departure from his earlier releases, but instead a notable shift in the confidence of his songwriting. Drawing on themes ranging from heartbreak, to personal indulgence, to leaving the comfort of a familiar scene, Temporary Towns is Berger’s ode to the town where he discovered his artistic voice.
Now a resident of Los Angeles, Berger has continued his streak of pulling from a range of influences, including the immersive words and phrases of Wilco’s Jeff Tweedy and the country-folk melodies of Townes van Zandt, on his most recent release The View That Comes With You, out March 16 via Just For You Records.
